El Elche CF has put forward a loan deal with a purchase option for Mexican midfielder Alexis Gutiérrez, but Club América has turned it down. The franjiverde side, currently sitting 15th in La Liga with 43 pts (10W‑13D‑15L) and a recent form of DWLDL, is looking to bolster its midfield for the 26/27 season.
What happened with the offer?
Reporter César Merlo notes that Elche proposed a loan including a buy‑out clause, which América deemed insufficient. Gutiérrez, 26, joined América last summer for five million dollars and has been used as an attacking midfielder, capable of playing on the wings or centrally. The Spanish club’s proposal stems from the recommendation of Martín Anselmi, Elche’s current manager, who first worked with the player at Cruz Azul.
Why does Anselmi want Gutiérrez?
Anselmi and Gutiérrez crossed paths at Cruz Azul, where the Argentine coach helped the Mexican showcase his best form. The manager believes that under his guidance the player can regain the consistency he has lacked this season. "I want Alexis to be the creative engine of our midfield," Anselmi said in a recent interview, highlighting his ability to add goals and assists.
What does this signing mean for Elche?
Adding Gutiérrez would improve a weak area; the team has conceded 57 goals this campaign, with a -8 goal difference. Having scored 49 goals, Elche needs more creativity to turn possession into clear chances. Moreover, the Mexican’s arrival could relieve pressure on local players who have seen limited minutes.
What’s the next step?
Elche will keep negotiating with América, trying to tweak the offer to make it acceptable. Meanwhile, the club remains focused on strengthening the squad before the transfer window closes. If the deal goes through, Gutiérrez would join a side fighting to climb out of the relegation zone, hoping to reach at least mid‑table.
The club is also monitoring other targets, but finalising the deal with the Mexican midfielder remains the top priority before the deadline.
