Elche CF experienced their first defeat of the campaign in a thrilling encounter at El Sardinero. The Franjiverdes fell 3-2 to Racing Santander in matchday three of LaLiga EA Sports, in a match dominated by a hat-trick from the home side's striker, Zabiri.
A devastating first half
Sebastián Beccacece's side ran into a brick wall during the opening 45 minutes. Zabiri opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a powerful left-footed strike from outside the box. The same player extended the lead at 21 minutes and completed his personal hat-trick in the 36th, leaving a commanding 3-0 scoreline at the break. Elche, despite having possession, failed to create clear chances and their defence showed vulnerabilities against Racing's ruthlessness.
The fightback fell short
The second half showed a completely different Elche CF, with greater intensity and control. Buba Sangaré pulled one back in the 78th minute, finishing a good assist from Tete Morente. Just one minute later, Fer Niño scored the definitive 3-2, generating hope in the final minutes. The visiting team raised their possession to 66% in this period and registered a total of 18 shot attempts throughout the match, five of them on target. However, the comeback ultimately fell just short.
Referee Muñiz Ruiz showed yellow cards to Facundo González and José Ángel Mantilla for Elche. The team faced the match without the injured Yago Santiago and Adam Boayar, forcing adjustments to the starting eleven.
The defeat leaves Elche CF with four points from a possible nine at the start of the competition. The team's next commitment will be at home, where they will look to return to winning ways and add points to climb the standings.
